A Postcolonial Reading of J. Kincaid’s Novel Lucy This article investigates the relationship between the colonized (Lucy) and the colonizer (Mariah and Lewis). Lucy has been overburdened by an overwhelming sense of humiliation and submissiveness that she suffered greatly from and tried persistently to rid herself of. The article is divided into three sections. I is An Introduction. II, “The Colonized-Colonizer Relationship”, is subdivided into four subsections as follows: II.1 Resistance and Opposition, II.2 Torn between Two Lands, II.3 Dreams: Obsession with the Colonizer, II.4 The Color Yellow Complex. Such are the main vistas (subtitles) through which readers of this article will be ushered into Lucy’s mind and outlook on life. III is the Conclusion. The article responds to the following questions: how is resistance to the colonizer a characterizing feature of Lucy’s personality? Why did Lucy suffer in both lands of her Antigua and America? Why was the color yellow discomforting to Lucy? How are Lucy’s dreams reflective of her obsessive preoccupation with the colonizer?
