The research focuses on the utilization of TikTok for the informal self-learning of Italian language L2/FL, addressing three key questions: What motivates students to employ TikTok for learning Italian? How do TikTok videos facilitate informal self-learning? And what impact does TikTok have on the language and communication skills of Italian learners?
The findings, based on a survey conducted among students at the B2 level of Italian proficiency, provide robust evidence that TikTok, with its distinctive features, can be considered as a valuable tool for informal self-learning. Additionally, it exerts a favorable impact on enhancing linguistic and communicative abilities.
TikTok's sophisticated algorithms offer a personalized learning experience, while its bite-sized, captivating content promotes micro-learning and sustains attention. Furthermore, the incorporation of visual and auditory components, along with the inclusion of subtitles, facilitates the information assimilation and provides valuable insights into Italian culture.
This study highlights the evolving landscape of language education, emphasizing the importance of staying constantly updated to fully harness the educational potential of these innovations.
